Ben Shelton Stages Thrilling Comeback to Defeat Karen Khachanov in Toronto Final

American tennis star Ben Shelton scripted a stunning comeback on Sunday, rallying from a set down to defeat Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the Toronto Masters final, clinching the biggest title of his career so far.

A Final Packed With Drama

The match, held at Sobeys Stadium, began with Khachanov in control. Using his booming serve and deep baseline strokes, the Russian took the opening set 6-3, forcing Shelton to chase the game early. The American, however, refused to be rattled.

With the crowd firmly behind him, Shelton elevated his level in the second set, breaking Khachanov’s serve at 3-2 with a fearless forehand winner. Riding the momentum, he closed the set 6-4, pushing the final into a deciding third set.

Decider Belongs to Shelton

In the third set, Shelton’s aggressive returning and explosive first serves proved decisive. He broke Khachanov twice, racing to a 5-2 lead. Serving for the championship, Shelton unleashed a pair of 140 mph serves before sealing the victory 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The win marks Shelton’s first ATP Masters 1000 title and solidifies his place among the rising stars of men’s tennis.

Shelton Reflects on the Victory

Speaking after the match, Shelton credited his fighting spirit and the energy from the Toronto crowd.

“It was a battle from the start. Karen played incredible tennis, but I just kept believing I could turn it around. The atmosphere here was electric, and it pushed me to give everything I had,” said Shelton.

A Breakthrough Year

This victory caps an impressive season for the 21-year-old American, who also reached the semifinals at the US Open last year and claimed his maiden ATP Tour title earlier this season. His aggressive playing style, fearless shot-making, and ability to perform under pressure have made him one of the most exciting players to watch on the circuit.

Khachanov’s Fighting Effort

For Khachanov, the defeat was disappointing, but the Russian praised Shelton’s performance.

“Ben played great in the key moments. I had my chances, but he took his game to another level when it mattered,” Khachanov admitted.

Looking Ahead

Shelton’s triumph in Toronto is expected to propel him further up the ATP rankings, potentially into the top 10. With the US Open just weeks away, the win not only boosts his confidence but also sends a strong message to his rivals: he’s ready to contend for the biggest prizes in tennis.
